Save a trip, open Edit trip and choose Share trip to create an invite link. Each person joins with their own account and can edit that trip’s details and expenses. The owner manages invitations and members.
Travelling together does not have to mean one person entering every expense. Share trip lets your group maintain the same spending record without sharing an account password.

One trip, one shared spending record
One person books the room. Another buys the train tickets. Someone else pays for dinner. Share trip gives you one place to record those costs and review the same trip budget.
Each person uses their own account. The invitation gives them access to that trip, including its existing expenses. Your other trips and personal settings stay separate.
Before you start, agree what belongs in the budget. Will it cover everything, or just spending while you are away? Our guide to prepaid flights, hotels and daily budgets helps you make that choice.
How to invite your travelmates
- Save your trip first. Create it with its name, dates, budget and currencies. If you need a hand, see the first-trip instructions.
- Open Edit trip. Select the saved trip, open its editor and choose Share trip.
- Create an invite link. Choose Create invite link, then Copy link. Send it using your usual messaging app. A Share link button also appears on supported devices.
- Let each person join. They open the link, sign in or create their own account, then choose Join this trip. New accounts may need email confirmation first.
The invitation shows the trip name and owner before joining. There is also a join option at the bottom of the Overview trip list where someone can paste an invitation link.
Anyone with the link and an account can join as an editor. A link lasts seven days and can be used by more than one person. ExpenseTravel does not send invitation emails for you.
What can everyone change?
Shared-trip members can add, edit and delete expenses, including entries created by another member. They can also edit trip details such as dates, budget and currencies. Invite people you trust to help maintain the whole record.
| Action | Who can do it? |
|---|---|
| View the shared trip and its expenses | Owner and members |
| Add, edit or delete any trip expense | Owner and members |
| Edit the trip budget, dates and currencies | Owner and members |
| Manage invite links and remove members | Owner |
| Delete the whole trip | Owner |
| Leave without deleting the trip | Members |
The owner manages access from Share trip. Other members can leave using Leave this trip. Leaving removes their access; their existing entries stay with the group.
Record each purchase once
Suppose Alex pays €120 for a hotel room used by two people. Record one €120 expense in the shared trip. If both people enter the same booking, the trip total becomes €240 even though the hotel cost €120.
The “Added by” label identifies who created an entry. It does not identify who paid. Share trip keeps a combined budget and expense list; it does not calculate individual balances, split bills or settle debts.
If you need to work out repayments, keep a separate record of who paid and how you agreed to divide costs. A description can provide context, but it does not create a repayment calculation.
The same rule applies to cash: count the purchase once. Read how to avoid counting ATM withdrawals and cash purchases twice before adding both.
When will another person's changes appear?
Use a connection when working on a shared trip. While the app is visible and you are outside an editor or sharing dialog, it checks for shared updates about every ten seconds. Returning to the app or reconnecting also refreshes the data.
If two people edit the same record, a stale save is rejected instead of silently replacing a newer change. Your draft stays open. Check the latest record, then close and reopen the editor before applying the changes you still need.
If an entry seems missing, check your account, connection and selected trip before adding it again. For converted amounts that differ from a card charge, see why the app total can differ from your bank statement.
Changing the group or stopping a link
Creating a new invite link replaces the previous one. Stopping a link prevents new joins. Neither action removes people who have already joined.
To remove someone's access, the owner must remove that member. Removing a member also stops the current invitation link. The remaining group keeps access, and the removed person's expenses stay in the trip.
Revoking access cannot take back a screenshot or exported copy someone already saved. Share only the trip information you are comfortable making available to your group.
A few questions before you share
Can I share with a group, not just one person?
Yes. The same active invitation link can be used by more than one person. Each person joins with their own account.
Will they see my other trips?
No. Joining gives access to that shared trip. Your other trips and personal account settings stay separate.
Can members use different languages?
Yes. Each person keeps their own language preference while viewing the same trip data.
Is it a bill-splitting tool?
Share trip records one group's trip spending and budget. It does not calculate what each person owes or arrange repayments.
